We had a family come in yesterday complete with Gramma and four kids ranging from 6 to 12 excited about the chance that they might get rained on on their trip down the Crystal River. They rented all single Ocean Kayaks and we put them in seven miles upriver. They were soaking wet by the time they got back here to our kayak and canoe livery. I believe it was the happiest customers of the season! They were virtually alone on the River and loved the challenge of man verses nature. As long as there is no lightning in the forecast (and even if there is, just get off the river and let it pass) there is no danger paddling down the Crystal River in the rain. In fact, this is a great opportunity to “wake up” your kids and teach them how tough they really are. Empower your kids. Get them out on the Crystal or out in the Sleeping Bear Dunes Park and show them that getting wet is fun! Tell a few stories about Sakajawea or Ernest Shackleton. Tell them about Native American Customs where they would send their thirteen year old boys out into the woods for two weeks alone. If the boys made it the two weeks, they were warriors, if they didn’t……not good. Or bring em in and I will tell story after story about how tough your kids are. Kids are so resilient and tough. I will remind them how determination and guts can make the difference between failure and success. Get your kids away from the dawgone T.V. or their IPhone and out into the great wilderness. Glen Arbor is 36 square miles of land, and the Incredibly Amazing Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park owns 30 of them! Your kids own that land just as much as any other American. It’s theirs, so lets get them out in those 30 square miles to explore……their land! Let us show you how. Stop into the livery at 5959 South Oak Street, ask for Mike or Becky and we will help you get out in the great outdoors and make some memories.
